The “Mestiza” is a fairly new vegan restaurant in El Cabanyal, approx. 5 min. walking distance from the beach.
Mestiza has been on our bucket list from the moment we stumbled upon it, since it’s one of a small number of restaurants in Valencia that offer a 100% plant-based menu. The food options cater to all tastes, with Spanish standards such as Patatas Bravas and Albondigas, as well as more exotic choices, such as Jackfruit Tacos, Pakoras and Pad Thai.
We were especially excited to try the Massaman curry, which we discovered for the first time many years ago in a tiny family-run restaurant on a trip around Thailand.
Price for café con leche: 1,80 €
We didn’t have any coffee so we can’t comment.
Good: The staff were very friendly and the restaurant has a very nice, relaxed atmosphere. We liked the vintage-style decoration and the plant-pots on the walls. They do have a terrace but we found the interior more charming. And, obviously, if you are vegetarian or vegan, you will know the amazing feeling of being able to choose from the whole menu, especially considering the Spaniards like their meat quite a lot in general (Sonja speaks from experience).
Bad: The food was good but for Valencian standards a tad overpriced.
Ugly: There are only three main course options available, rather a small selection for recurring visits.
The Mestiza is a lovely choice for having a relaxed dinner after a day at the beach, especially if you’re looking for plant-based or healthy meal options. Since it’s not located directly on the sea front you will also have the opportunity to explore a bit more of the up-and-coming neighborhood of El Cabanyal.
